Thompson Brook School is a ten-year-old school comprised of the district’s 593 fifth and sixth graders. It is a structure and a community dedicated to meeting the cognitive, physical and social-emotional needs of our pre-adolescent population.
Upon entering the wide, bright and welcoming hall, one feels the caring and senses the respect for the importance of the learning that takes place within. Off the main hall to the left is a health and wellness wing: gymnasium, two well-equipped exercise rooms and health classroom. Off to the right, a beautifully appointed, sun-lit library stocked with 20,000 volumes of literature to address the skills and learning levels of fifth and sixth graders. The library is flanked by two computer laboratories. Continuing down the hall on the left, one finds the entrance to the music suites: offices, choral room, the strings practice room as well as the stage occupied by instrumental musicians. The cafeteria is famous for its deli and more than one student has lamented that TBS lunch is not available on Saturdays! All classrooms meet current codes for square footage and are filled with natural sunlight.
As in any school, the real treasures are the people within. Teachers are talented, skillful and dedicated professionals. New ideas are welcomed and shared through peer collaboration. Job-embedded professional staff development opportunities are evident and are in line with best practices, enabling teachers to implement new programs across curricular areas. The recent addition of a literacy coach has supported the current refinement of the language arts curriculum. Teachers work alongside dedicated parents to construct a safe, nurturing yet challenging environment in which students grow and learn.
Children thrive in the student-centered environment at Thompson Brook School. Entering fifth graders from both elementary schools join together for the first time in their school careers to meet those from the community of Avon with whom they will travel to high school graduation. Support and guidance are built in and help children navigate the somewhat turbulent waters of building new friendships and interacting with challenging content area curriculum: traveling from learning to read to reading to learn.
Our motto: "A place to wonder, a wonderful place to learn" highlights the importance all members place on thinking, creativity and the joyful pursuit of each child's personal best.
